HMA is usually loaded into a truck at a fairly uniform temperature between 250°F to 350°F (see Figure 2). During transport, heat is transferred to the surrounding environment by convection and radiation and the HMA surface temperature drops. HMA temperature affects its binder viscosity, which affects compaction in two ways: (1) the colder and more viscous the binder, the less actual amount of air void reduction for a given compactive effort, and (2) HMA can only be compacted until it reaches cessation temperature, therefore initial HMA temperature and mat cool-down rate establish a It is generally medically accepted that normal body temperature ranges between 36.5°C (97.7°F) to 37.5°C (99.5°F). Fever is indicated when human body temperature rises about one degree, or more, over the normal temperature of 37.0 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit). Nov 06, 2002 · The research evaluated several newly developed low temperature performance tests under Nevada’s conditions. The goal of the research was to determine the applicability of the tests for characterizing the low-temperature response of Nevada’s asphalt binders and hot-mixed asphalt (HMA) mixtures. Construction-related HMA temperature differen-tials resulted in the placement of a significantly cooler portion of HMA mass into the mat. The cooler mass came from the surface layer or crust that typi-cally develops during the transport of HMA from the mixing plant to the job site. Originally it was thought HMA specifications (Items 341, 342, 344, 346, 347, and 348) offer contractor incentives to use this imaging technique by eliminating the contractor’s requirement to run density profiles (not applicable for Items 347, 348), and by relaxing the placement temperature requirements. than the minimum laydown temperature for AC nor higher than 350º F (175º C) or the manufacturer’s recommendations for polymer modified asphalt (i.e., PG 76-22 and PG 70-28).
