I opened up the connection manager in control panel and opened connection settings to be sure that everything was where it was supposed to be. It wasn't. I guess when you create a VPN on Windows 8, it chooses "Automatic" for the type of VPN. I changed it to PPTP, and tried reconnecting. Volia, it worked. Sort of.

If so, you may want to purchase a new splitter. Check the length of the telephone cord between your computer and the telephone jack. Optimum length is less than 10 feet.
